Losing Streak Over!

The long Minnesota state nightmare is over, as the Gopher soccer team came from behind to beat Northwestern 2-1 yesterday to end a rough week in ‘Sota sports. Katie Kozar and Sadie Harper scored for the Gophers.

The Weekend Ahead

Wild

The Wild, fresh off getting just one of four points in Vegas, plays at Arizona tonight (8 p.m.) and tomorrow (6 p.m.). Minnesota is tied with Colorado for third in the West, two points up on fifth-place Arizona. The Wild will finally get home after that, beginning a five-game homestand Monday and Wednesday against Las Vegas and concluding with three in a row against Arizona. We are sure to see a motivated Zach Parise after Dean Evason scratched him Wednesday.

Gopher Men

If it seems like deja vu, the Gopher men’s hockey team heading into the final week of the season needing to beat Michigan to win the Big Ten title, that’s because it’s the second year in a row. Wisconsin plays a bad Michigan State team. Assuming they sweep the Spartans, the Gophers need a tie or win in one game against the Wolverines to secure the Big Ten title, in addition to a first-round bye in the single-elimination post-season tournament at Notre Dame. Tonight’s game is on FSN+ at 7, and tomorrow’s is on BTN at 4. Should the Gophers win the regular season title, they’ll play Monday, March 15 in the Big Ten semifinals.

Gopher Women

All four teams should make the NCAA Tournament, but it’ll be quite a weekend for WCHA supremacy at Ridder Arena. National No. 1 Wisconsin plays the host Gophers on Saturday at 1, and UMD and Ohio State follow at 5. The championship is Sunday at 2. All games will stream live on Flohockey.tv. I’ll be on hand at all three games.

Garnett Not Buying Wolves

A cryptic message from Kevin Garnett on Instagram saying he’s no longer in the running to buy the Wolves from Glen Taylor. Interestingly enough, Taylor told The Athletic that Garnett never contacted him to say he’s interested. Let’s face it, communication was never a strong point between The Big Ticket and Taylor.

United Signs Homegrown Player

The Loons signed their second-ever homegrown player yesterday, inking Wayzata High School product Patrick Weah to a four-year contract. Weah, who is a product of the MNUFC Academy, currently plays for St. Louis University. Weah is just 17 and was born in Maple Grove.

Minor League Road Trip From Hell

I’ve been on some tough minor league roadies, but nothing like what the San Jose Barracuda’s put up with to begin the season. Detailed oral history of the jaunt from ESPN’s Emily Kaplan, which included a week-long delay in Texas due to the ice storm, a near bus accident, 50 frozen pizzas and Uncrustables.

The Barracuda’s coach – Roy Sommer, by the way, has been with the Sharks or their minor league team since 1996! I’m not sure there will ever be another guy to serve 25 years in the same organization.

Ovechkin Really Hit Hard for this Spear

Star Alexander Ovechkin was fined for a vicious spear this week to Boston’s Trent Frederic family jewels. How much? As Mark Lazerus pointed out, his fine is equal to a $26.21 fine for someone that makes $50K a year. That’ll really show Ovy.

Reader Question

Q: Is there a cliche dish at a popular restaurant you deliver for that when ordered, you assume a (redacated) tip? -Ed from Kentucky

A: Denny’s Sirloin and Eggs. If you’re splurging on steak at Denny’s, you’re not tipping your driver much.
